Performance review win: lazy worker described as motivationally challenged

“You haven’t hit any of your goals so just try harder next time”

Sydney – Sitting snugly in the corner meeting room of the government office was Procurement Officer Marcus Hodge ready to have his performance review with manager Laura Wright.

‘Well then, let’s discuss your performance shall we’, said Mrs. Wright to a seemingly apathetic Mr. Hodge. ‘You haven’t hit any of your SMART goals, nor have you shown initiative with improving processes, and to top it all off you’ve been sick for 17% of this quarter. Is there anything you would like to say?’. Mr. Hodge said he was trying his best but you know how these things are, and vowed to do better next time.

After his performance was analysed Mrs. Wright added to her notes that Mr. Hodge was motivationally challenged but that this behaviour is on par with this particular government agency. Instead of clear directive and suggesting steps to improve she just gave a vague recommendation and something about synergy.
